Food for the Soul, With a Little Bit of Cheek
Tucked away in Sunwich Port, near Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, The Phrase has been making homemade treats since 2020. The promise behind the brand is simple: everything is made by hand, at home, with love as the main ingredient.
What makes The Phrase different is the combination. Few makers can tempt you with a slab of creamy fudge and then dare you to try a Carolina Reaper sauce, but this South Coast kitchen does both, and does them well. Its own motto sums it up: homemade, fun, flavourful and a little bit cheeky.
The Range
Ten Chilli Sauces, Every Heat Level
The Phrase is at its most inventive in the chilli range, pairing fiery peppers with unexpected partners like strawberry, litchi, peach and even chocolate. The range moves from fruity and friendly to seriously hot.
Everyday heat, in 250ml bottles:
- Bird’s Eye & Cayenne
- Bird’s Eye & Strawberry
- Lemon Zest Peri Peri
- Habanero & Peach
- Habanero & Mango
- Jalapeño & Green Pepper
- Jalapeño & Litchi, which the makers recommend adding to a salad dressing
The super-hots, in 125ml bottles for the brave:
- Carolina Reaper & Peppadew
- Chocolate Reaper & Black Cherry
- Ghost Chilli & Cherry Tomato
Every sauce is homemade with quality ingredients and no artificial colours, so the vibrant reds, golds and greens in each bottle come straight from the fruit and chillies inside.
The Sweet Side
Fudge, Toffee and Coconut Ice
Balancing out the heat is a counter full of old-fashioned sweet treats. The Phrase makes its fudge in four flavours, Traditional Vanilla, Cappuccino & Chocolate, Salted Caramel, and Amarula & White Chocolate, each sold in slabs of six melt-in-the-mouth blocks.
Alongside the fudge you will find a rich, buttery Old English Toffee slab, Chocolate Toffee Fingers dipped in chocolate, and classic Coconut Ice.
